This review is from: Manchester United – The Greatest Ever XI [DVD] (DVD)
Fantastic collection of DVD’s. Back to the classic United DVD standard with a bang! It’s a great tribute to great Manchester United players past and present and I hope now this is the benchmark for which all future Bombo United DVD’s have to equal or excel. Hopefully they keep this format for the season review this season!

This is my experience with my mates who have followed football for years, like many ,many other fans. Watching these films is fantastic. Being a 1950′s baby, I well remember the tragedy of Munich. Since then I have moved in circles with Manchester United supporters over England and Wales. Passionate to say the least, enthusiastically devoted at the very least. The discussions turned more personal in terms of player choice and ability as nights went on (no beer!). We looked at these 4DVD collections of the Manchester United journey as a re-learning process as well as a timely reminder of the importance of the club’s role in football’s domestic and world development. This was a way of life. Not a hobby. The jigsaw fitted. If a piece didn’t fit, it was quickly replaced. This collection of film history takes a football club through the greats of legendary players, numerous trophies, great managers and their achievements. They are all there in memory and history. Some half-forgotten but the other half remembered. The class players are there, plus the ‘cloggers’ (the day-to day players) just as important are there to remind us as anybody with a football brain can see them for themselves and I would not wish to insult local fans’ greater knowledge. The boys from Manchester, many pals, have lots more opinionated views. This is my personal look after 60 years of a dominant club world wide. Not comprehensive, just a recommendation of the DVD’s from an outside perspective.Goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, forwards. All are extensively covered. Look forward to hearing the afficianado fans and what they have to say.The DVD’s tell it all, or most of it,and I presume given the ‘Greatest Club In The World’ (widely held) we will hear more , of course. Can’t wait. I’m sure this will be well-received and will cause much discussion. No offence to other clubs who have magnificent records and look forward to their releases in comprehensive form. Nothing provokes discussion more than football (politics, maybe, but boring).

Manchester United has dominated the English game for the past two decades but this DVD focuses not only on those players who helped United win 12 Premier League crowns, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 2 European Cups and be crowned the world’s best team twice during this golden era, but on all of the players who have made Manchester United the club it is today. There are old black and white snippets from past eras including the 1950s when the famous Busby Babes were not only the greatest team in England but in Europe. And it was nice to see Clarence “Lal” Hilditch, the only man to have ever been the player-manager of Manchester United, get a mention. But what better way for the DVD to start than to show the greatest footballer the world has ever seen, the mercurial Belfast Boy himself, George Best. Quite fittingly the first action we see is George famously chipping the ball over his international team-mate, Pat Jennings’, head in a First Division match at Old Trafford with two defenders standing on the line! And this is soon followed by the audacious, but quite brilliant, chip Eric “The King” Cantona did in a Premiership game at Old Trafford against Sunderland. Two United legends, each unique in their own distinctive and iconic way. But this DVD is so much more than a look at the famous strikers we have been brought up on following United. It is a search for the Greatest Ever Manchester United XI which is no mean feat when you look at the household names that have pulled on the famous red, or green goalkeeper’s jersey, of Manchester United. In this DVD you will learn what Manchester United actually means to us the fans because many fans from different countries have aired their opinion on who they believe is the greatest goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker in our history. United stand, as the club has always stood from its earliest beginnings, like a rock, for the enjoyment of all men regardless of race or nation and the United fans have their say in this excellent DVD. To be the best team in the world is a contest of will and purpose as well as force and aggression, a battle for minds and souls as well as silverware, but imagine fielding the Greatest Ever Manchester United XI. What a team! And at the end of this DVD, Disc 4, we find out which players have been named by the fans as United’s best ever side. Many of you will argue as to why a certain player was omitted but many of you will also nod your head in agreement with many of the selections. United stand for the ethos of the beautiful game and that is the players’ commitment to us the fans but in this DVD the fans get to pay their own fitting tributes to their own United heroes. Enjoy.
