At last, a footy book that doesn’t insult the reader’s intelligence,
This outstanding biography ignores the usual stereotypes about Harry Redknapp, separating the man from the myth. It looks at Redknapp’s career in painstaking detail from his early days as a West Ham player right up to the present season. The author has obviously done a lot of research, but rather than being anoraky the book is very entertaining and is helped along by lots of little stories and anecdotes, several of which had me laughing out loud (I especially liked the one about him stopping mid-match to check the racing results!). Most of these tales are told by people who seem to have been interviewed specifically for the book, including Alvin Martin, Milan Mandaric, Shaka Hislop, Dejan Stefanovic, Jim Gabriel, John Williams, Rodney Marsh etc etc. As a West Ham fan I was intrigued to get Alvin Martin’s take on the story behind Redknapp replacing Billy Bonds. I don’t agree with the author’s suggestion that Redknapp should be the England manager, but that doesn’t change the fact that this beautifully written book is the best I’ve read since Duncan Hamilton’s bio of Brian Clough.
